Rainy day urban "abstract". Captured on our taxi ride home through downtown Vancouver

The cold snap is over for now and the steady rain is causing flooding in some parts of Vancouver due to melting snow.

... or is it a bit of Paradise in the Swiss Italy?

In Ticino's Canton, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland.

A bit closer today but maybe too close to her taste. I think she wanted me to go away or maybe it was the strong wind and hard for her to stay on the post ! We never know and, in doubt, I left :-)

I took this shot in the Audubon Marsh near the River Loire Estuary (France)

Bit of a special evening yesterday! Popped up to one of my favourite local places after work, Healey Dell nature reserve near Rochdale, a little hidden gem of a place right near the town, kinda hidden away.

It's the kinda place that if it was in the Lake District it would be swamped by visitors and you'd have to pay £10 to park, but as it is, there's virtually never anybody around, even locals don't know what they have there :)

This is the 2nd of a series of 5 or 6 big waterfalls that run through the place.

But when I got there my eyes nearly popped out at how beautiful it had become with the golden leaves carpeting the rocks.

One of those special moments that makes you feel good to be alive :)

Happy Friday all :)

It was a bit too hot for this old guy to go looking for Elephants or Alligators, so I had to settle for taking Pics of the Hummingbirds that frequent my backyard. I believe this is an Allen’s Hummingbird.

The Allen's Hummingbird:

In early spring, a narrow strip of scrub and chaparral along the Pacific Coast starts buzzing with the sights and sounds of the coppery and green Allen's Hummingbird. Males flash their brilliant reddish orange throat and put on an elaborate show for the females, swinging in pendulous arcs before climbing high into the sky and diving back down with a sharp squeal made by their tails. These early migrants mostly spend the winter in Mexico, but some stay in southern California year-round.

Allen's Hummingbirds breed in a narrow strip of habitat along coastal Oregon and California. Male and female Allen's Hummingbirds use different habitats during the breeding season. The male sets up a territory overseeing open areas of coastal scrub or chaparral, where he perches conspicuously on exposed branches. The female visits these areas, but after mating she heads into thickets or forests to build a nest and raise the young.

The Allen's Hummingbird is a remarkably early migrant compared with most North American birds. Northbound birds may depart their wintering grounds as early as December, arriving on their breeding grounds as early as January when winter rains produce an abundance of flowers.

Like other birds, Allen's Hummingbirds use their feet to help control their body temperature. When it's cold outside they tuck their feet up against their bellies while flying, but when temperatures soar, they let their feet dangle to cool down.

The oldest recorded Allen's Hummingbird was at least 5 years old when she was captured and rereleased in California during banding operations in 2009. She was banded in the same state in 2004.

Peaceful Sunday

Bit of a fun shot. This Snowy Egret was on it's way back into the sea to carry on fishing when it sensibly paused for a moment. The fact that the wind had also whipped up it's crown feathers was a real bonus.

Taken at North Beach, Fort De Soto, Florida.

Thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving any comments or faves, they are very much appreciated.

Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus). This wood pigeon was trying to keep cool by oscillating his throat. However, he just looked a bit deranged to me!

It's a good thing foil came up as a theme for Macro Mondays because now I have a reason for keeping a bag of multicolored foil bits! Perhaps they'll make it into ice cubes some day but for now it's a foil abstract.

Knowing a bit more about photography makes it easier to understand how and why some oil paintings, say the impressionist, abstract or even watercolour paintings, came into being.

Thanks (once again!) to Kitty von Cat for the use of her build for this!

With a bit of an influx going on at the moment with Painted Lady butterflies, it reminded me of this encounter from last Summer, when a similar Spring influx led to some rather nice specimens later in the year when the eggs laid by the early arrivals became British hatched butterflies in immaculate condition.

I had to wait nearly 30 minutes for this one to nectar on the Bramble stem away from the main bush. The background was a field some distance away and after watching the butterfly for the 30 odd minutes feeding in the centre of the bush I very nearly decided it wasn't going to use this stem at the edge of the bush. As it was it was only showing on this stem for a few seconds before it headed back to the jungle of the main part of the bush.

One of two very memorable Painted Lady sessions in 2021.

Even today, travelers to Greece can still find many hidden treasure destinations which retain their almost unspoiled beauty, such as the island of Trizonia.

As hard to believe as it may be, because Greece has such a long coastline, as well as almost innumerable islands, there still are a wealth of locations which would make one think that these places are off the map.

One such island without a doubt, is Trizonia, located in the Corinthian Gulf just 400 meters (1,312 feet) off the southwestern coast of the region of Fokida.

The island is said to have been named for the sound of its crickets, which you can always hear singing away while you are there.

This is the famed island which, after visiting it in the 1960’s, Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis attempted to buy — lock, stock and barrel — from the local people who lived there by offering them an enormous lump sum of money.

The locals refused, famously saying that this specific paradise was not for sale. Minas, a local restaurateur, shared with the Greek Reporter that occasionally the thought does cross his mind that “it would have been good if Onassis had bought it.”

The islanders’ refusal is what led Onassis later to buy the island of Skorpios in the Ionian Sea, which he made into his own personal Eden.

The island of Trizonia has been called by many a miracle of nature. While staying on the island, which is just 2.4 square kilometers, or barely one square mile, travelers can forget everything from the outside world, including cars, motorbikes, noise — and stress.

Trizonia is also an island garden of sorts, boasting almond, prickly pear, eucalyptus, holly, plum, and olive trees, as well as pine and cedar trees throughout.

The island only has 40-50 residents in the winter. However, Minas maintains that “in the winter it’s a bit difficult, it gets a bit cold, but if you have good company, good wine and good food, everything is fine.”

With a natural, unspoiled landscape that amazes visitors, its lacework of interconnected, continuous beaches, and sapphire waters, Trizonia and its singing crickets beckon to the discerning visitor who needs a break from the modern world.

Edward Blaquiere, a former lieutenant in the Royal Navy and a well known philhellene of his time, visited Trizonia in 1825 and he mentions a ruined village. He also mentions the excellent harbour of the island which is sheltered from all winds. The Greek military leader and politician Andreas Londos came to Trizonia in 1827 with 500 soldiers. In the ensuing battle with the 2000 Ottomans who were there at that time, the Greeks under the guidance of Londos won, causing great damage to the Ottoman army.

Think I will have a "Bit of Something on Blue week" (bound to be fairly minimal so no offence if you decide to pop back when it's all over :-)

Blue On Black

While watching into an aquarium, I met this little guy (and immedeately fell in love). He was very interested in me and followed my camera in every part of his little world. I think he saw himself, mirrored in the glass of the lense.

I always pass this pump station at Elan in mid Wales and think tilt-shift would work, finally the miniature version is here!!!

Caught in a bit of nice light

A newly hatched green turtle heads for its first swim. Luck had been on its side so far as it was carefully transferred to the turtle hatchery on Lankayan island. Wish I'd had a bit more DOF but always learning.

she had bits of soul

in everything. from

her laugh to her

tears and in a world

of plastic smiles

and corrugated

feelings,

you couldn't help

but feel it.

Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) Yesterday Mrs Grackle - today Mr Grackle in the same wind!

Would have gone out today, it was fine enough, but other things got in the way. So took a photo of some ribbon I found, while sorting out something else. It looked OK, but I decided to play around with it a bit.
